Merano and surroundings

The mild Mediterranean climate and the warm hospitality have already impressed Empress Sissi in the past. The charming area of Merano and surroundings offers an extraordinary variety of landscapes, climates and cultures and is therefore one of the most popular holiday regions in South Tyrol.

Sunshine all year round

The holiday area Merano and surroundings has a mild Mediterranean climate all year round, which favours the growth of exotic and Mediterranean plants such as palm trees and cypresses. Especially in spring, the apple blossom wraps Merano in a white-pink blossom dress.

In spring and summer, enthusiastic hikers and mountaineers can enjoy challenging mountain tours and hikes on high-altitude trails in rustic side valleys such as the val d'ultimo/Ultental, the Val Senales/Schnalstal or the Texel Group Nature Park. On the Alta Via di Merano/Meraner Höhenweg you can admire the flora and fauna in a multitude of vegetation levels. In Lagundo/Algund, an old cable car from 1965 makes it easier to reach the Alta Via di Merano.

Bike lovers will find a well-developed network of cycle paths and mountain bike trails and if you prefer to explore the Merano countryside on horseback, then we recommend you to go to Avelengo/Hafling, the home of the famous Haflinger horses.

In autumn, various events and performances take place in many valleys and villages, such as the Merano Grape Festival and the Chestnut Festival in Tesimo/Tisens. During the traditional Törggelen you can enjoy South Tyrolean specialities and roast chestnuts.

The family-friendly ski resort Merano 2000 is located close to Merano, as are the Schwemmalm and Plan/Pfelders ski resorts. Those who prefer to stay in the valley can also visit one of the numerous Christmas markets in Merano and surroundings.

The Spa Town of Merano

Merano has been known as a health resort since the 19th century. Here blossoming gardens meet snow-covered mountain peaks and, from a culinary point of view, alpine and Mediterranean cuisine merge to form a harmonious whole.

Merano also has a lot to offer from a cultural point of view: from theatre, music and wine festivals to traditional horse races at the big Merano Race Course.

Another highlight in Merano are the beautiful Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, with more than 5,000 plant species from all over the world.

In the city centre you'll also find the Thermal Baths, with numerous thermal water pools and a beautiful park.
